BIOMATERIALS IN PRACTICE

Aurelia Noudelmann

Aurelia Noudelmann (based in Amsterdam) makes site-specific sound installations in dialogue with the biodiversity of the domain she finds herself in. The urgent need to recompose our listening and exchange systems with our environment guided her research towards an interactive installation, the main actors of which are plant bodies.

Through a program made on Arduino, the vibrations of their roots were translated into MIDI notes, generating a spatially variable sound composition. For the group exhibition in Bratislava, Noudelman has reflected on the various resources that the exhibiting designers are using and transforming in their works, and conceptualised a live performance with orange and banana trees, mycelium and corn. Due to the recent lockdown, this new piece will be postponed and an existing track will be used to activate the exhibition space as well as its presentation online.

The designers on show represent a long term and holistic, yet step by step approach on innovating bio-cycles. Their work renegotiates the relationship of man, technology and nature and highlights the role of transdisciplinary collaborations.

The designers work within the potentials and limitations of a new (bio)material landscape and take it upon themselves to test, develop and explore applications. Some of the studios struggle with the performance of their organic materials, while others still have a (long) way to go in the process of scaling up their promising findings.

In order to gradually shift from the petroleum based production and waste systems, and bring about systemic change, they intervene at different stages of a globalised value chain.
